Congratulations to Elaine Lewis who has been awarded the French Chevalier dans l’ordre des Palmes Académiques

Formerly a music educator, Elaine Lewis worked as a writer for over 10 years in both Melbourne and Sydney, publishing educational material and song-books. In 1996 she created the Australian Bookshop in Paris to promote Australian writers. Between 1996 to 2001 she organized more than 70 readings for visiting Australian authors, artists and musicians. Her love of the French language led her to commence translating the works of poets from France, Belgium and Canada. These translations have been published in France, and Elaine has hosted many festivals here and in France to give a platform to emerging and established writers.

The Ordre des Palmes Académiques (Order of Academic Palms) is an order of knighthood of France for academics, cultural and educational figures. It was instituted in 1808, and there have been relatively few foreign recipients. We warmly congratulate Elaine, who sat for a portrait by Wade Ashley some years ago, and is also the much-loved Aunt of Catherine Ashley.
